Las Posadas, which translates to "The Inns," is a centuries-old Advent tradition.
Each evening will include a rosary, a sung reenactment of Mary and Joseph searching for room, and will finish with appetizers and fellowship.
How are we welcoming Jesus into our lives? Let us use this celebration as an opportunity to open our hearts and minds to the true meaning of Christmas.
What is Las Posadas?
Las Posadas: A Cherished Advent Tradition
Las Posadas, which translates to "The Inns," is a centuries-old Advent tradition that originated in Spain and is still widely celebrated in Mexico, Latin America, and North America. This nine-night celebration, which takes place from December 16 to Christmas Eve, commemorates the journey of Joseph and Mary as they searched for shelter in Bethlehem.
Schedule and Participation
The celebration will take place from December 16 to Christmas Eve. 7:00pm-9:00pm every night in Sirba Hall, We invite you to participate in the reenactment and to join us for the community celebration.
Reflection and Participation
As we participate in this reenactment, let us reflect on our own hearts. How are we welcoming Jesus into our lives? How are we saying "yes" to Him, and where are we saying "no"? Let us use this celebration as an opportunity to open our hearts and minds to the true meaning of Christmas.
The Celebration
Each evening, a couple dressed as Joseph and Mary, accompanied by musicians and followers carrying candles or torches, will visit a designated "door." The group, known as the peregrinos, will engage in a dramatic exchange with the posaderos, who represent the inn-keepers of Bethlehem. The posaderos will initially reject the peregrinos, only to eventually welcome them.
Community Celebration
Once the peregrinos are admitted, the community will come together to celebrate. Traditional foods, such as chocolate and biscochitos, will be shared, and songs will be sung. A piñata in the shape of a seven-pointed star will be smashed, symbolizing the star that guided the Magi.
We look forward to celebrating Las Posadas with you!
